Charges to EBT card or credit/debit card

EBT cards only cover the cost of EBT-eligible items. For more information on EBT-eligible items and how to find them when shopping, check out our Find EBT-eligible items article.

You must add a credit or debit card to your Instacart account to cover the cost of delivery and service fees, bottle deposit fees, taxes, tips, and any non-EBT items.

Adjust charges between payment methods

Look under Your payment split at the bottom of the Place Order page to see the expected charges to each payment method. Select Change to adjust the charges.

You can also adjust charges after checking out, up until delivery. After delivery, you can no longer adjust your payment split. You can’t increase the amount charged to your EBT card if it exceeds the total amount of EBT-eligible items in your order.

In-app—

  1. Tap More at the top of the order confirmation page.
  2. Tap Adjust totals.
  3. Tap Charge more to EBT.
  4. Enter the amount you want to charge to your EBT card.
  5. Tap Charge more to EBT.
  6. Enter your EBT PIN and tap Submit.

On website—

  1. Click Manage order at the top of the order confirmation page.
  2. Click Charge more to EBT.
  3. Enter the amount you want to charge to your EBT card.
  4. Click Charge more to EBT.
  5. Enter your EBT PIN and select Submit

Add items after checkout

Visit Order Changes to learn how to add or update items after checkout.

On the website

When adding items to an order after checkout on the website, you'll be prompted to select if you want to charge the items to your EBT card or to your back-up payment card.

If you choose to charge your EBT card, you'll see an Update EBT balance screen that is pre-populated with the new balance. You must then re-enter your PIN to confirm the charges.

Changes to weighted items

You may see a by-weight item message under your EBT card at checkout. Your shopper may need to adjust the weight of items like meat or produce due to in-store availability.

If the new weight is higher than what you ordered, we charge the extra cost to your credit or debit card, or you can remove the item and get a refund.

Note: Items added after checkout or any changes to weighted items automatically charge to your credit or debit card. If the item is EBT-eligible, you can change this charge to your EBT card up until your order is delivered.

Item replacement instructions

After placing your order, you can select replacement items if the item you want is out of stock. Check out Adding instructions for specific items, replacements, or delivery for more information.

To avoid charges on your credit or debit card, replacements for EBT SNAP items must be—

  1. EBT-eligible

  2. Equal to or less than the value of the original item

If the EBT-eligible replacement costs more, the difference is charged to the credit or debit card you used at checkout. When searching for replacement items, look for SNAP under the price of each item to know if it is EBT-eligible.

Shoppers can replace EBT items with non-EBT items.

  • You can approve or refund non-EBT replacements before the shopper checks out.
  • If you approve, we charge your credit or debit card for the item.
